by Lothar Frenz and Judith Schalansky (eds.)
Plump and uninhibited in appearance, characterized by a friendly pachyderm and furious monster: rhinoceroses often have a difficult position in the descriptions of humans. Nevertheless, or for this very reason, they have exerted a colossal fascination for us for thousands of years. In his natural and cultic history, Lothar Frenz sings a tender and knowledgeable look at the Rhinozeros and pursues his great performances from the cave paintings in Chauvet over Diirer's famous woodcut to the horny "Jungfer Clara", the Star Rhino the 18th century and protagonists of the first pan-European advertising campaign. But his attractiveness became a disaster for him as well: Frenz shows how the greed for the legendary Horn threatened to threaten his holdings. Thus this portrait is at the same time a requiem for a fabulous animal that man still misunderstands as a trophy.
