Brehms Tierleben im Spannungsfeld von Empirie und Fiktion
(Münchner Beiträge zur Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft)
by Andreas Schulze
Brehm's Animal Life is one of the most successful animal books ever released in Europe. Translated into many languages, it was occasionally advertised as »the most famous animal book in the world«. The authors of fictional texts also dealt with Brehm's animal life, such as Wilhelm Busch, Franz Kafka and Arno Schmidt. Of the secondary literature Brehm's animal life is generally classified as a popular scientific work of high literary importance. His approach is considered "completely new," "groundbreaking," or "epochal," as Brehm was the first to provide accurate accounts of animals and to anthropomorphise animals. The present study shows that this opinion is for the most part wrong. She examines Brehm's animal life in a fascinating way and unlocks the secret of his success.
