Wildlife and humans live in close proximity to Central Europe. Many specialized species are under pressure due to habitat loss, disturbance or climate effects. Other species benefit from emerging resources and their populations are rapidly increasing. They can overuse their habitats or cause damage in crops. Returnees also trigger controversial discussions. In this field of conflict between the needs of wildlife and the demands of humans a modern wildlife management is in demand. This includes a fact-based problem analysis, biologically, legally and socio-politically realistic goal definitions, packages of measures in the context of a gravity cascade and adequate success controls.
With fundamental considerations, explanations of the legal situation and case studies, the authors point out such regular processes and demand respectful treatment of wild animals.
